Abu Dhabi Hosts First WASLI World Conference in Arab Region

Abu Dhabi is set to make history as it hosts the World Conference of the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI) for the first time in the Arab region. The global event highlights the UAE’s commitment to inclusive development and the rights of Persons with Disabilities under the UN Convention.

The conference gathers sign language interpreters, educators, and government and civil society representatives from across the world. Discussions will focus on interpreter education, professional standards, training, research, and innovative practices in delivering high-quality services to the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. Local interpreters will also gain a unique opportunity to network with international peers and exchange expertise.

In a landmark initiative, ZAPoD, in collaboration with WASLI, has launched a specialised Level 4 Diploma in Sign Language Interpretation, accredited by the UAE’s National Qualifications Centre. The diploma covers both Arabic and international sign languages, preparing professionals for simultaneous and written interpretation across sectors such as healthcare, education, justice, media, and public services.

The programme combines advanced cognitive and practical skills, field training, and a strong emphasis on ethics and professional standards. Its aim is to raise service quality, ensuring accurate and effective communication for People of Determination across the region.

The conference also provides a platform for dialogue on regional challenges, cross-border collaboration, and opportunities to unify efforts in promoting Deaf rights. WASLI’s structure includes nine global regions, offering participants both regional and international perspectives.

This event positions Abu Dhabi as a global hub for inclusion, while the diploma programme sets a benchmark for professional training in the Arab world, strengthening sustainable and equitable services for the deaf and hard-of-hearing.
