Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has achieved a significant milestone by placing over 90 master’s and PhD students in prestigious internships as part of its comprehensive career services and internship programme. This initiative supports the university’s mission to integrate academic learning with practical industry experience, which is crucial for students specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) and its various disciplines.
MBZUAI, recognized as the world’s first graduate university solely dedicated to AI research, places a high value on practical experience. The university mandates internships for students enrolled in fields such as computer science, computer vision (CV), machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), and robotics. These internships are designed to equip students with hands-on experience, preparing them to meet the growing global demand for AI expertise.

The university’s career services team has facilitated international placements for its students in several countries, including Canada, China, Russia, and Pakistan. Additionally, students are gaining experience at leading academic institutions like the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology in Japan, and Johns Hopkins University in the United States. They are also interning at prominent organizations such as Microsoft Research Lab – Asia in China and the University of Luxembourg. MBZUAI is listed among the top 100 computer science universities globally by CSRankings and ranks in the top 20 for its AI, CV, ML, NLP, and robotics specializations.
Prof. Timothy Baldwin, Provost at MBZUAI, highlighted the surge in AI interest and its impact on business and academia. He noted, "The increase in AI as a driver of productivity and innovation has spurred unparalleled collaboration between academia and industry, intensifying the competition for talent. MBZUAI’s strong industry connections and focus on practical experience ensure that our graduates are well-prepared to contribute effectively to AI advancements."
The UAE’s status as a global AI hub is reflected in the involvement of 31 national companies and government entities in the internship programme for 2024. Notable UAE employers include ADNOC, Etihad Airways, Core42, e&, Dubai Police, and Dubai Airports. Additionally, students are working with leading data companies and startups such as LibrAI, Invertible AI, LABIB AI, Exafy, VisionLabs, and Mindware. Many of MBZUAI’s 212 alumni have chosen to remain in the UAE to leverage their expertise and address significant global challenges.
The university’s career services team offers personalized support to connect students with opportunities, providing coaching, interview preparation, and career planning assistance. Industry partners engage with students through events, information sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities, further enhancing the career development process.
