A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The quake’s epicentre was located approximately 127 kilometres west of Kokopo, a coastal city in the eastern part of the country, at a depth of 68.2 kilometres.
Papua New Guinea is situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a highly active seismic zone that is home to about 90 percent of the world’s active volcanoes. The region frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic activity due to the movement of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface.

While there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage, residents in surrounding areas reported feeling tremors. Local authorities have urged people to remain cautious, especially in areas near fault lines and volcanic regions.
Experts note that earthquakes in Papua New Guinea are common, ranging from minor tremors to more significant seismic events. The depth and magnitude of Tuesday’s earthquake suggest that while the shaking would be noticeable locally, the risk of widespread destruction is relatively low.
Seismologists continue to monitor the region closely, highlighting the importance of preparedness in earthquake-prone areas like Papua New Guinea.
