In New York City, a subway station in the Bronx became the scene of a shooting, with multiple individuals reportedly shot, as indicated by the local police on Monday. Local media sources, citing unnamed police officials, reported that up to six people may have been hit by bullets. According to the ABC TV affiliate, one person succumbed to their injuries, while five others sustained wounds that were deemed non-life-threatening.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) spokeswoman revealed that they currently lacked specific details regarding the number of individuals shot and the condition of the victims. Moreover, it remained uncertain whether the shooter was in custody.
Despite the recent incident, statistics indicate that crime remains infrequent on New York's subway system. On an average weekday, approximately 3.8 million trips are taken on the system, with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reporting a total of 570 felony assaults in the entire year of 2023.
Shootings, in particular, are rare occurrences. The last notable incident took place in 2022 when a man wielding a handgun injured 10 people on a Brooklyn-bound train, marking the first mass shooting attack on the subway since 1984. Subsequently, in May 2022, another shooting occurred as a man fatally shot 48-year-old Daniel Enriquez on a Q train in what the police described as an unprovoked attack.
Concerns about subway safety escalated during the early stages of the pandemic when subway crime rates spiked in early 2020. However, by 2021, crime levels had returned to normal, though riders' perceptions of danger remained elevated.
Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat and former city police captain, has sought to address commuters' unease by increasing the presence of police officers in subway stations. This move is part of ongoing efforts to reassure the public and enhance safety measures in the wake of persisting fears about the security of the subway system.
