Zuckerberg tries to hire Google engineer with personal email, says report

Reports indicate that Meta, Facebook's parent company, is intensifying its focus on artificial intelligence (AI) by bolstering its AI team. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is personally recruiting experts from rival firms like Google's DeepMind, reaching out to them directly via email to join Meta's AI projects. Sources familiar with the situation reveal that Zuckerberg is actively persuading researchers to switch sides. Meta is reportedly streamlining its hiring process, offering jobs without formal interviews and negotiating salaries and incentives to attract top talent, as reported by The Information.

Meta's AI efforts aim to transform its platform's video recommendations. Tom Alison, head of Facebook, disclosed Meta's strategy to consolidate recommendation systems into a single powerful AI model, enhancing the engagement and responsiveness of suggestions across the platform. This move involves integrating recommendation features for Reels, Groups, and Feed under one system. However, Meta faces a challenge due to a shortage of computer chips. As a significant buyer of Nvidia's H100 chips, Meta spent $4.5 billion in 2023. With the release of Nvidia's new Blackwell (or B200) chip, demand is high, causing delays in shipments, with Meta anticipating waiting until 2025 to receive their orders.
