Kyiv, Ukraine: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the replacement of Lieutenant General Yuriy Sodol, the Commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the embattled eastern region, on Monday. This decision follows allegations of incompetence and abuse of power amidst ongoing struggles against Moscow's forces in the east, nearly two and a half years into the conflict.
In his daily evening address, President Zelensky stated, "I have decided to replace Lieutenant General Yuriy Sodol with Brigadier General Andriy Gnatov." However, specific details regarding the reasons for Sodol's dismissal were not disclosed by Zelensky.
The move came after criticism from Bogdan Krotevych, commander of the Azov brigade, which has affiliations with the far right. Krotevych had filed a complaint with Ukraine's SBU security service, calling for an investigation into Sodol's alleged incompetence and responsibility for Ukrainian soldier fatalities on the front lines.
Media reports suggest that Ukraine, facing superior Russian military strength, has been struggling defensively for several months. Moscow's forces have incrementally gained control over new territories in the eastern regions, though without achieving a decisive breakthrough.
This leadership change underscores Ukraine's ongoing challenges in maintaining defensive positions and strategic stability amid the prolonged conflict with Russia.
