The Zayed Charity Run will take place in Abu Dhabi on November 23, 2024, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in the Al Dhafra Region. The event will commence from the ERTH Hotel in Abu Dhabi, highlighting the emirate’s commitment to charitable initiatives.
A press conference was held at the ERTH Hotel, attended by prominent figures, including Lieutenant General Mohamed Helal Al Kaabi, His Excellency Aref Hamad Al Awani (General Secretary of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council), and His Excellency Mohamed Haji Al Khoury (Director General of the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation for Humanitarian Works). Other attendees included Amal Bou Shalakh, member of the UAE Football Association's Board of Directors, Mohammed Hazam Al Dhaheri (Secretary General of the UAE Football Association), Yaqoob Al Saadi (Director of Abu Dhabi Sports Channels), and Maryam Hamad Al Shamsi (Secretary General of Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan Cultural and Educational Institutions). During the conference, it was announced that preparations for the charity run are already underway, with participant registration set to open in September 2024. The run aims to accommodate all interested participants from the UAE, including those from government and non-government sectors.
Lieutenant General Mohamed Helal Al Kaabi confirmed that proceeds from the 2024 race will benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, which focuses on supporting research and developing treatments for multiple sclerosis. Last year's race funds were directed towards cancer treatment at the Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Centre.
Elaborating on the origins of the race, Al Kaabi noted that it was established in 2001, inspired by the vision of the UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The initiative aims to serve as a symbol of generosity and humanitarian effort, achieving charitable goals year after year. The event has since expanded internationally, reaching cities like New York in 2005 and Egypt in 2014, becoming a model for global humanitarian outreach.
The Chairman of the Organising Committee expressed gratitude to Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed for his ongoing support of the race and its humanitarian objectives. He mentioned that the upcoming edition would start at the Abu Dhabi Legacy Hotel, with specialized organizing committees working diligently to ensure the event's success.
Regarding prizes, the total value for this year’s edition is set at AED 1.5 million, with AED 750,000 designated for Emirati winners and the same amount for international participants. The race is open to all, celebrating sportsmanship and community involvement.
Aref Hamad Al Awani highlighted the Abu Dhabi Sports Council's commitment to collaborating with the Higher Organising Committee to facilitate the race's success, noting that last year’s event attracted 7,000 contestants and received official registration from the International Federation. Al Awani anticipates increased participation this year, spurred by the raised prize values.
Ghalya Ahmed Al Ali, a founding member of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, detailed the organization’s formation and its impact on improving the lives of those affected by the condition. The society, established in 2022 as a non-profit entity, aims to empower individuals with multiple sclerosis through awareness and support.
Yaqoob Al Saadi discussed enhancements for this year's race coverage, including a unified broadcast across the nation’s channels and outreach to Arab networks to ensure comprehensive coverage of the event’s charitable mission.
Al Saadi emphasized that the Zayed Charity Run extends its values from the UAE to a global audience, reinforcing its legacy in humanitarian work and philanthropy. He acknowledged the efforts of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, whose contributions have greatly impacted many nations.
Finally, Mohammed Al Shatri, Director of the Community Events Department at the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, outlined the race's various stages, participation categories—including those for People of Determination—the race route, registration processes, and associated events planned alongside the main race.
This year’s Zayed Charity Run promises to uphold its legacy of giving and strengthen community bonds through sport and philanthropy.
