Yemen Conflict Escalates as Separatist Leader’s Sudden Trip to Abu Dhabi Raises Concerns

The situation in Yemen has become increasingly concerning following the Saudi-led coalition's announcement of Aidarous al-Zubaidi, a prominent southern separatist leader, arriving in Abu Dhabi under uncertain circumstances. His unexpected trip and absence from scheduled talks in Riyadh have sparked significant apprehension regarding the trajectory of peace negotiations and the growing rifts among Yemen’s regional allies.

As reported by the coalition, al-Zubaidi, head of the Southern Transitional Council (STC), made his way to Somaliland by boat before boarding a flight to Mogadishu, Somalia. Reports indicate that he subsequently flew to a military airbase in Abu Dhabi, with the coalition stating that UAE officers supervised the aircraft, though it remains unclear if al-Zubaidi was present upon landing. These developments have intensified confusion and distrust surrounding the incident.

This incident emerges at a precarious juncture for Yemen, which has endured over ten years of conflict marked by violence, famine, and political instability. Saudi Arabia and the UAE have been pivotal players in a coalition that intervened in Yemen after the Iran-aligned Houthi movement seized control of the capital, Sanaa, in 2014, both aiming to bolster Yemen’s internationally recognized government and counteract the Houthis.

However, the recent events indicate a dilution of unity within the coalition. The turmoil in southern Yemen has laid bare a noticeable discord between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the leading Gulf nations involved in the fray. While Saudi Arabia remains aligned with the central government, the UAE has historically backed the STC, advocating for either independence or increased autonomy for southern Yemen.

The STC, established in 2017 with strong UAE support, emerged as a dominant entity in the south, ultimately joining the government coalition. Nevertheless, discord persisted. Just last month, STC forces abruptly took control of sizable regions in southern Yemen, altering the power dynamics and resulting in direct clashes of opinion between Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Al-Zubaidi's absence from the Riyadh meetings heightened the fragility of an already tense situation. These discussions aimed to mitigate growing hostilities and avert additional violence, and his nonappearance led the coalition to express uncertainty over his whereabouts. Shortly after, the STC declared al-Zubaidi was in Aden managing military and security strategies, which did little to allay public worries.

The coalition also highlighted that the aircraft departing from Mogadishu switched off its identification system while traversing the Gulf of Oman, only reactivating it shortly before its arrival in Abu Dhabi. Such maneuvers are commonly associated with military or sensitive missions, further escalating speculation and skepticism. According to the coalition, the aircraft resembled those typically used in conflict-stricken areas like Libya, Ethiopia, and Somalia.

The UAE has yet to respond to these observations, nor has the STC provided any further details, creating a vacuum for rumors and uncertainties, complicating diplomatic endeavors.

The overarching concern for Yemen lies in what lies ahead. Ongoing discord between Saudi Arabia and the UAE threatens to undermine stabilization efforts in the country. Divergent regional agendas risk prolonging Yemen’s prolonged war. The ordinary Yemenis, who have already faced immense hardship due to loss, hunger, and displacement, are likely to bear the brunt of the continued unrest.

This incident underscores a harsh reality about the Yemen conflict; it is not merely a civil battle but also shaped by external interests and rivalries. A genuine peace can only be attained when these external powers find common ground, as al-Zubaidi’s enigmatic journey to Abu Dhabi reflects deeper fissures that could continue to widen unless swift actions towards dialogue and cooperation are established.
