Henry, a Nile crocodile, is now recognized as the world's oldest living crocodile, reaching the remarkable age of 123. This enormous reptile, measuring 16 feet in length and weighing 700 kilograms, has sired over 10,000 offspring with his six ‘wives,’ according to the zoo where he resides.
Henry's life began in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on December 16, 1900. Known for his imposing size and formidable fang-like teeth, Henry is often considered the largest living crocodile. Despite his enormous size, his early years were marked by a notorious reputation for preying on local children. This led local tribes to seek the help of Sir Henry Neumann, a famous hunter, who was tasked with eliminating the menace.
Instead of killing Henry, Sir Neumann decided to capture him, ensuring the crocodile would spend his life in captivity rather than continuing his reign of terror. Since then, Henry has spent the past three decades at the Crocworld Conservation Centre in Scottburgh, South Africa. He remains a significant attraction, captivating visitors with his sheer size and advanced age.

Henry's story is a stark contrast to his current status as a zoo attraction. His previous reputation for man-eating has given way to a role as a prominent feature at the conservation center, where he is admired and respected from a safe distance.
As a Nile crocodile, Henry belongs to a species that inhabits 26 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa. Nile crocodiles are apex predators and are responsible for numerous fatalities each year in the region due to their aggressive nature.
While Henry holds the title of the oldest crocodile, the largest crocodile is Cassius, a 16-foot saltwater crocodile residing in Australia. Cassius, who was captured in 1984, now lives at the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat on Green Island, off Queensland’s coast, where he has become a notable attraction in his own right.
