Lahore, the cultural hub of Pakistan, has unfortunately been declared the world's most polluted city, with an alarming Air Quality Index (AQI) soaring to 394. This hazardous pollution level poses serious health risks to residents, leading to issues such as coughing, breathing difficulties, eye irritation, and skin infections.
The AQI serves as a crucial measure of the concentration of various pollutants in the air, with readings above 100 categorized as unhealthy and those above 150 deemed “very unhealthy.” Lahore's current AQI reflects a critical environmental situation that requires immediate attention.

The primary contributors to Lahore's smog crisis are the burning of crop residues and emissions from industries. To address these pressing issues, the Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has launched the 'Anti-Smog Squad.' This initiative aims to educate farmers on alternative methods for disposing of crop residues and encourages the use of super seeders to minimize environmental damage.
In response to the city's dire situation, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari announced, “Yesterday Lahore was declared the most polluted city in the world. We have taken several initiatives to tackle the issue, and we are now planning for artificial rain in the city.” This highlights the government's commitment to finding innovative solutions to combat pollution.
The phenomenon of smog, which combines smoke and fog, occurs when specific polluting microparticles mix with cold, moist air and settle near the ground. This results in reduced visibility and poses various health hazards.
Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasized that the positive impacts of the government's initiatives would take time to manifest, projecting a timeframe of 8 to 10 years. She urged farmers to refrain from burning crop residues, stressing that this practice not only harms agricultural productivity but also adversely affects the health of children in the region.
Recognizing the urgent need for action, the Punjab government has declared a war on smog. With Lahore's AQI exceeding 150, classified as "very unhealthy," immediate solutions are essential to protect public health.
Earlier this month, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz called for “climate diplomacy” with India, highlighting the need for joint efforts to mitigate smog's effects in the province. She noted that stubble burning in India's Punjab significantly impacts air quality in Lahore due to prevailing wind patterns, emphasizing the need for collaborative measures to address this cross-border environmental challenge.
