A neurologist has explained why resistance training is important for people of all ages. Resistance training means exercises that make your muscles work against some kind of force, such as lifting weights or using resistance bands. These simple exercises can protect your bones, muscles, and balance as you grow older.
Bone density slowly goes down with age. This means bones become thinner and weaker. But doctors say that this process can be slowed if people stay active. Regular strength training helps the bones stay strong, reduces the chance of fractures, and improves overall stability.
Dr. Bing, a neurologist and brain-health advocate, shared this message in a video posted on November 12. He explained that many people avoid strength training because they think it is too hard or not needed. But according to him, this type of exercise is important for everyone, no matter their age.
He shared the story of a patient in her 70s. The woman had a simple fall at home. She tripped on a small step and did not fall from a height, but she still broke her femur, which is the thigh bone. She also hit her head, had a brain bleed, and later had seizures. Doctors found that she had osteoporosis, a condition where bones become weak and brittle.
Dr. Bing said that stories like this are very common. When people do not use their muscles regularly, their bones also become weak. As people age, their balance and strength naturally decrease. Without exercise, this process becomes much faster.
He explained that resistance training is one of the best ways to prevent this. These exercises put gentle pressure on the bones. This pressure signals the body to build stronger, denser bones. This can greatly reduce the chances of serious injuries, especially hip and femur fractures.
According to Dr. Bing, resistance training also improves balance and stability. These benefits help older adults avoid dangerous falls. Even young people should start strength training early so they can build strong bones for later life.
Experts say that resistance exercises do not need to be difficult. Even simple movements done at home can help. Small weights, resistance bands, or even body-weight exercises like squats and push-ups can make a big difference.
The message is clear: staying active is important at every age. Resistance training helps protect the body, keeps bones strong, and supports long-term health. Even a few minutes a day can help people stay safe, strong, and independent as they grow older.
