She recalled that their mother instilled in them the belief that they could achieve anything, stating, "She knew that we could be the authors of our own story."

Maya Harris has been a pivotal figure in Kamala's life and career. Following the separation of their parents, Donald Harris and Shyamala Gopalan, Maya and Kamala chose to live with their mother, a decision made when they were just 12 and nine years old, respectively.

Maya pursued her legal education at Stanford Law School, subsequently working as a civil litigator. Her career includes roles as an adjunct law professor, Dean of Lincoln Law School of San Jose, and a focus on policy, civil rights, racial, and gender justice. She has also been a visiting scholar at Harvard Law School and a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress. Additionally, she served as the vice president of democracy, rights, and justice at the Ford Foundation and was the executive director of the ACLU of Northern California.

In 2020, Maya Harris took on the role of campaign chairperson for Kamala Harris' presidential bid. Prior to that, she was a senior policy advisor for Hillary Clinton during her 2016 presidential campaign, where she led a team of policy experts and developed Clinton’s domestic policy.

On the personal front, Maya Harris welcomed her daughter, Meena, during her teenage years. Meena played a significant role in Maya's life, even acting as a matchmaker when she introduced her mother to Tony West, who would later become her husband. Maya and Tony’s relationship began when Meena, then four years old, played hide-and-seek with West on Stanford University's campus.

Today, Maya Harris is also a grandmother, with two granddaughters, Amara and Leela. She frequently shares moments with them on social media, highlighting her close-knit family life.
