Vistara Updates Stranded Passengers in Turkey After Mumbai-Frankfurt Bomb Threat

Vistara Airlines has announced plans to send a substitute aircraft on Saturday to retrieve passengers stranded at Erzurum Airport in Turkey. This action comes in response to the diversion of its Frankfurt-bound flight from Mumbai on Friday due to an alleged bomb threat.

The flight, Vistara UK 27, which departed Mumbai at 1:01 PM local time, was scheduled to arrive in Frankfurt at 5:30 PM local time but was rerouted to Erzurum Airport after the crew discovered a note indicating a bomb threat. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner landed safely at 7:05 PM local time.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Vistara stated that all necessary security checks have been completed and that both the passengers and crew have been cleared by security agencies. The airline explained that, due to the crew exceeding their duty time limitations, a substitute aircraft with a new crew will be sent to Erzurum. This replacement aircraft is expected to arrive at 12:25 PM local time and depart for Frankfurt with all passengers by 2:30 PM local time. 

To mitigate the inconvenience to passengers, Vistara has provided refreshments and meals while they wait. The airline expressed its regret for the disruption and emphasized that the safety and security of its customers, crew, and aircraft are of utmost importance.

According to Associated Press reports, Erzurum Governor Mustafa Ciftci stated that the bomb threat note was found in a lavatory, prompting immediate action from bomb disposal teams. The aircraft was evacuated, with 234 passengers and 13 crew members safely disembarked. The note's origin remains unknown.

Initially, the flight was intended to land in Ordu, northern Turkey, but due to construction work, it was rerouted to Trabzon before being directed to Erzurum. This choice was made to avoid congested air traffic. Consequently, Erzurum Airport suspended all departures and landings until 9:00 PM local time.

The airline’s spokesperson noted that Vistara has coordinated closely with security authorities to address the situation and resume normal operations.
