VIP Treatment for Instagram TikTok Stars at Kamala Harris' Democratic Event

In a striking move to leverage social media influence, the Kamala Harris campaign extended VIP treatment to social media influencers at the Democratic National Convention held this week in Chicago. Influencers from platforms like Instagram and TikTok were given exclusive perks, including private yacht parties, complimentary drinks, and special access that was not afforded to traditional press.

The convention, which often took on a festival-like atmosphere, saw influencers enjoying luxury amenities and tailored experiences. This approach highlights the campaign's strategic shift towards engaging with the digital audience that commands significant online followings.

Benjamin Zamora, a former journalist turned influencer with 6.3 million followers, noted the disparity in treatment between influencers and the mainstream press. “People have to realize that a lot of these creators have larger audiences than CNN, The New York Times, Univision, Telemundo, ABC,” Zamora said, reflecting on the campaign's decision to prioritize social media stars.

The convention saw over 200 influencers accredited, a new trend that aligns with Harris’s strategy to expand her electoral base. Influencers were not only given prime locations within the United Center but also access to areas with high-end food and drink options, a stark contrast to the modest amenities provided to traditional journalists.

Five influencers were even featured as speakers during the convention. Among them was Carlos Eduardo Espina from Uruguay, who expressed his surprise and gratitude at being included in such a prestigious event. “It’s really incredible that they gave us that opportunity,” Espina said, emphasizing the significance of his presence alongside prominent political figures.

Influencers at the convention were granted extensive mobility, allowing them to capture and share unique content. In contrast, mainstream media had a designated area outside the stadium with minimal comfort. This disparity in treatment underscores the growing influence of social media personalities in shaping political narratives.

For some, like 12-year-old influencer Knowa, the convention was a major highlight of their career. Despite his young age, Knowa has gained recognition for his outspoken political commentary and has met Harris multiple times. “The first thing I do when I wake up, I Google Kamala Harris. That's it,” Knowa shared.

Other influencers, such as Blair Imani, who has 642,000 Instagram followers, focused on diverse content areas, including interviews with political figures like Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “They’ve given us access, they’ve been so hospitable,” Imani said, acknowledging the campaign’s efforts to accommodate independent content creators.

The Harris campaign’s decision to roll out the blue carpet for social media influencers reflects a broader trend of integrating digital platforms into traditional political events, aiming to reach and engage with younger and more diverse audiences.
