Severe storms triggered dangerous flash flooding along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road overnight, with Wye River overwhelmed beyond capacity as fast-moving floodwaters swept multiple vehicles directly into the sea. Holiday areas, including a local caravan park, were rapidly inundated, forcing people to flee for safety.
Residents described the situation as terrifying, with some narrowly escaping as floodwaters surged through the area within minutes. Authorities issued urgent warnings as the intense downpour struck the steep Otways catchments, causing sudden runoff that left little time for evacuation.
Flood alerts were also raised for nearby waterways, highlighting the extreme risk posed by rapidly rising rivers and unpredictable storm activity. Officials stressed that such fast-developing floods are especially deadly and urged communities to take immediate precautions during severe weather events.
