At least 39 people have been killed and dozens injured after a deadly train collision in southern Spain, authorities confirmed on Sunday night. The crash occurred near Adamuz, close to the city of Córdoba, making it Spain’s worst rail disaster in more than a decade.
According to Spain’s Civil Guard, a Madrid-bound high-speed train derailed on a straight section of track and crossed into the opposite line, where it collided with an oncoming train travelling south toward Huelva.
The collision happened at 7:45pm local time, around one hour after the train left Málaga. Rail operators said around 400 passengers and staff were onboard both trains.
Emergency services treated 122 injured people. 43 remain in hospital, including four children. Thirteen patients—12 adults and one child—are in intensive care. Officials warned the death toll may still rise.
Spain’s Transport Minister Óscar Puente described the incident as “extremely strange,” saying railway experts were baffled by how the crash happened. An official investigation has begun, but authorities said final conclusions may take at least a month.
The trains involved included a Freccia 1000 high-speed train, capable of speeds up to 400 km/h, though officials have not confirmed the speed at the time of the crash.
Rescue teams faced major challenges due to twisted and overturned carriages. Firefighters said some victims had to be removed to reach survivors trapped inside.
Witnesses described scenes of panic. One passenger said the impact felt like an earthquake, while others reported screaming and calls for medical help.
All rail services between Madrid and Andalusia were suspended and are expected to remain closed throughout Monday.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the nation would face a “night of deep pain.” King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia also expressed condolences to the victims and their families.
The Spanish Red Cross deployed emergency teams and counsellors to support survivors and relatives. Assistance centres were set up at major stations, including Madrid, Seville, Córdoba, Málaga, and Huelva.
Spain’s last major rail tragedy occurred in 2013, when a derailment in Galicia killed 80 people. Spain has one of the world’s largest high-speed rail networks, covering over 4,000km.
