A severe cold wave has gripped North India, with Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir recording a freezing temperature of –8.9°C. Light snowfall continues in higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, while dense fog has blanketed Delhi-NCR, Punjab, and Haryana, severely reducing visibility.
Minimum temperatures in several parts of the northern plains have dropped below 5°C, intensifying winter conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that an intense Western Disturbance may bring heavy rain, snowfall, and hailstorms around January 23, potentially disrupting Republic Day rehearsals and transportation services.
The extreme weather highlights growing climate vulnerability and is expected to impact daily life, travel, and agriculture across the region.
