Veteran journalist Jim Avila, known nationwide for his decades-long career as a senior correspondent and his impactful storytelling, has died at the age of 70 after a lengthy illness. His passing marks the loss of one of American journalism’s most respected and influential reporters.
Avila’s career spanned major national networks, where he served most prominently as a Senior National Correspondent and White House reporter. Before that, he spent many years as a correspondent covering some of the nation’s most significant stories and political developments.
His younger brother, investigative reporter Jaie Avila, confirmed the news, sharing a deeply emotional tribute.
“Jim was an outstanding reporter. He inspired me to get into the news business and in many other areas of my life,” Jaie said. “He won just about every award there is, but he was especially proud of being inducted into the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Hall of Fame in 2019.”
Their bond extended beyond the newsroom. In 2018, when Jim’s kidneys began to fail, Jaie donated one of his own.
“Jim loved his three children most of all—Jamie, Jenny, and Evan. The transplant allowed him to see one of his children get married and welcome two grandchildren. That was a tremendous blessing,” Jaie said.
Jim had openly shared how the transplant changed—and saved—his life.
“I wouldn’t have lived… Jaie and my kids saved my life. There’s no way I could have done six to eight years on dialysis,” he said after the surgery. “We had a race to get this done before dialysis, and we won.”
During his time covering the White House, Jim Avila was a key correspondent during the Obama administration. His investigative work and political reporting helped shape national conversations on major policy shifts, including the historic reopening of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba. That exclusive story earned him the prestigious Merriman Smith Memorial Award.
Beyond political coverage, Avila was known for his fearless reporting, sharp analytical skills, and ability to bring clarity to complex national issues. Over the course of his career, he earned:
Two National Emmy Awards
Five Edward R. Murrow Awards
Multiple honors recognizing excellence in investigative journalism and public service reporting
In 2021, Avila stepped away from his national news role but returned to the field in 2023, joining KGTV-TV in San Diego as a senior investigative reporter—proof of his lifelong dedication to journalism.
Industry colleagues remember Jim Avila not only for his award-winning career but also for his unwavering commitment to truth, integrity, and mentorship.
In a message honoring his legacy, ABC News President Almin Karamehmedovic wrote, “We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, including his three children, and we thank him for his many contributions and unwavering commitment to seeking out the truth.”
Jim Avila leaves behind a legacy built on excellence, courage, and a deep passion for journalism—a legacy that will continue to influence and inspire future generations of reporters.
