On the afternoon of August 6, 2025, a terrible cloudburst hit Uttarkashi district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The sudden burst of heavy rain caused massive flash floods and landslides, especially in the mountain village of Dharali. This event turned into a big natural disaster, affecting many people, homes, and businesses.
The cloudburst triggered fast-moving water that flowed down from the hills, sweeping through two sides of the same mountain — one side toward Dharali village and the other side toward Sukki village. Both villages are known for their hotels and homestays. Videos on social media showed houses collapsing like dominoes, with local people crying out for help.
As of now, at least five people have died and around 50 people are still missing. Over 130 people have been rescued so far by teams from the Indian Army, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local volunteers. About 150 army personnel have been deployed in the rescue efforts. Many roads are damaged, bridges are broken, and mobile networks are down in the region.
A tragic incident occurred at an Indian Army camp in Harsil, where at least 11 army personnel went missing due to the flash flood. Rescue teams are working to find them, but continuous rain and dangerous weather conditions are making it hard to reach certain areas.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the affected areas in an aerial survey. He also held a meeting with top officials and army representatives to speed up the rescue operations. He shared on social media that relief camps have been set up, and arrangements are being made for food, medicines, and shelter for those affected. Helicopters from the Indian Air Force, such as Chinook and MI-17, are ready to help with evacuations once the weather gets better.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Chief Minister Dhami to take stock of the situation. He was told about overnight rescue operations and efforts being made to bring affected people to safe places. CM Dhami confirmed that the Disaster Operations Station in Dehradun is working 24/7 to provide all needed support.
One very disturbing video shows a car being swept away by the strong water, with people trapped inside. Bystanders can be heard yelling that there are people in the car, but it is unclear what happened to them as the video cuts off.
Experts say cloudbursts like these are becoming more common in places like Uttarakhand. Some believe that climate change is playing a role in increasing heavy rainfall events. Himanshu Thakkar, an expert from the South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers & People, said early warning systems and better flood planning are needed to save lives.
However, he also warned that blaming everything on climate change is not right. Governments must be better prepared and make sure the right steps are taken before and after disasters.
Due to constant rain, many highways and roads in Uttarakhand are now blocked or broken. In Chamoli district, the Badrinath highway is closed at three places. A road connecting to the India-China border has also been closed. In Raini village, the Joshimath-Malari road has cracked, making travel even more dangerous.
In Uttarkashi, a major part of the Gangotri National Highway has collapsed. Rescue teams are finding it hard to reach remote areas like Gharavi village due to these road conditions.
The state government has issued emergency helpline numbers to help people in trouble:
These lines are open 24/7 to provide updates and assistance.
While Uttarakhand is struggling, nearby Himachal Pradesh is also facing heavy losses this monsoon. Since June 20, at least 192 people have died, 36 are missing, and hundreds more are injured due to floods and landslides. The state has already suffered losses of nearly ₹1,753 crore.
One survivor from Dharali, whose home was destroyed, said, "Everything is over." These words reflect the pain and shock that many families are going through right now.
This flash flood is a strong reminder of how nature can change lives in minutes. The bravery of rescue teams, the quick action by the government, and the kindness of local people have saved many lives. But much more needs to be done to prepare for such events in the future.
The people of Uttarkashi and nearby villages now face a long road to recovery, but with support from the government and the community, they will rise again.
