US Woman Sentenced to 11 Years for Killing Alleged Sex Trafficker

Chrystul Kizer, a 24-year-old woman from the United States, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree reckless homicide. This sentencing follows the death of Randall Volar, the man she claimed trafficked her when she was a teenager. Kizer will also serve five years of parole and is required to submit a DNA sample to authorities. Additionally, she will attend a restitution hearing. Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley noted that the 11-year sentence is reduced by 570 days, accounting for the time she served while awaiting trial.

The case dates back to 2018, when Kizer, then 17, fatally shot 34-year-old Volar at his home in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She fired a gunshot into Volar's head, set his house ablaze, and stole his BMW. Initially, Kizer faced numerous charges, including first-degree intentional homicide, arson, car theft, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Kizer met Volar when she was 16 and alleged that he sexually abused her multiple times. At the time of Volar’s death, prosecutors were already investigating him. However, they noted that Kizer did not mention her trafficking experience during the killing. In a 2019 interview with The Washington Post, Kizer recounted that in 2018, she visited Volar’s house with a gun, which she claimed was given to her by her boyfriend for protection. During the visit, Volar allegedly drugged her, and they began to argue after he touched her despite her refusal to have sex. Kizer claimed that Volar then pinned her down, leading her to shoot him twice. Following the shooting, she set Volar's body on fire and drove away in his car, expressing a desire to escape from her troubled past.

Prosecutors accused Kizer of premeditated murder, alleging she intended to steal Volar’s BMW. In a significant legal development in 2022, the state Supreme Court allowed her to argue self-defense under a law that permits victims of trafficking to present an affirmative defense for crimes committed as a direct result of their trafficking experience. Earlier this year, Kizer was released on a $400,000 bond but subsequently violated bail conditions by fleeing the state. She was apprehended two weeks later in Louisiana and returned to Wisconsin to face her sentencing.
