Howard University in Washington DC has taken the decision to revoke rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs' honorary degree after a CCTV video from 2016 surfaced online, depicting him hitting his ex-girlfriend Casandra Ventura. The university cited Combs' behavior in the video as being fundamentally incompatible with its core values and beliefs, leading to the withdrawal of his highest honor.

The Howard University Board of Trustees unanimously voted to accept Combs' return of the honorary degree conferred upon him in 2014. This action entails the revocation of all honors and privileges associated with the degree, with the Board directing the removal of his name from all documents listing honorary degree recipients.

Furthermore, the university has decided to return a $1 million contribution and terminate a 2016 gift arrangement with Combs, including a scholarship in his name, along with a 2023 pledge agreement with the Sean Combs Foundation. Notably, Combs had attended Howard University from 1987 to 1989.

Combs faces multiple civil lawsuits alleging violent sexual misconduct, with accusations portraying him as a predator who used alcohol and drugs to subdue victims. Federal agents raided his homes earlier this year in connection with these allegations.

The CCTV footage that triggered the university's action depicts Combs hitting, dragging, and kicking Ms. Ventura, who subsequently filed a lawsuit alleging years of coercion, physical abuse, and a rape incident in 2018. Despite Ventura's lawsuit being settled out of court, it was followed by a series of similar allegations against the hip-hop star.

In response to the controversy, Combs issued a statement on Instagram expressing remorse for his actions, stating that his behavior in the video was "inexcusable." He acknowledged seeking professional help, including therapy and rehab, following the incident, expressing his commitment to personal growth and improvement.

The decision by Howard University to revoke Combs' honorary degree underscores the institution's commitment to upholding its values and principles, irrespective of the individual's status or achievements. It also serves as a reminder of the consequences of behavior that contradicts the ethical standards expected of members of the university community.
