A 13-year-old girl from the Pittsburgh area, who had been reported missing early last month, spent time in an adult jail after deceiving authorities about her age and identity following a shoplifting arrest. The case came to light when someone at Beaver County Jail recognized her as a missing person, leading officials to promptly remove her from the adult population.
Beaver County District Attorney Nate Bible confirmed on Tuesday that the girl had been reported missing since early August. On August 6, Pittsburgh police had issued a public notice about her disappearance, and she was reportedly seen around the city and using public transportation.
On August 17, the girl was apprehended in Beaver Falls for retail theft after stealing items from a store. During her arrest, she provided police with a false name and birthdate, leading them to believe she was 18 years old. This misrepresentation resulted in her being placed among adult inmates at the jail.

Despite her repeated claims to officers that she was a minor from the Pittsburgh area, the girl initially misled them by stating she was homeless. Efforts by Beaver Falls police to locate her through child services agencies in both Beaver County and Allegheny County, where Pittsburgh is situated, were thwarted due to the false information she provided. Consequently, no records were found under her fabricated identity.
The situation was rectified when a jail official recognized her as a missing person. Authorities then took the necessary steps to separate her from the adult population. The girl's parents were notified and subsequently picked her up. The charges against her have since been transferred to juvenile court, as she was correctly identified as a minor.
