Washington: On Friday, the US Supreme Court refused to lift a block imposed by several Republican-controlled states on new anti-discrimination rules aimed at expanding protections for transgender students. This decision came after the Biden administration requested the Court to overturn the injunctions that had halted the implementation of these rules.
In April, President Joe Biden's administration sought to extend existing regulations that prohibit sex-based discrimination in schools to explicitly include gender identity. However, courts in ten Republican-dominated states intervened, temporarily blocking these new protections. In response, the Biden administration appealed to the Supreme Court to address the issue.

In a 5-4 ruling, the Supreme Court chose not to act while the legal challenges at the state level continue. The Court's conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch, along with the three liberal justices, dissented partially, expressing a desire to see less contentious provisions of the rules implemented.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor, in her dissenting opinion, criticized the decision for maintaining injunctions that prevent the enforcement of the entire rule, including sections that are unrelated to the concerns raised by the challengers. She described these injunctions as "overboard," highlighting the broad scope of their impact.
As a result, the new anti-discrimination rules, which were part of a broader set of regulations, will remain suspended in the Republican states while the legal battles continue.
