US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on Thursday that the United States would be implementing new visa restrictions and reassessing its relationship with Georgia. This decision comes in response to Georgia's recent adoption of a controversial law reminiscent of Russian legislation regarding "foreign influence."
Under the new visa policy, individuals deemed responsible for undermining democracy in Georgia, along with their family members, will face visa restrictions. Additionally, the US government will undertake a comprehensive review of its bilateral cooperation with Georgia.
The Georgian law in question mandates that NGOs and media organizations receiving more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad register as entities serving the interests of a foreign power. Despite significant protests, Georgian lawmakers passed the bill, sparking concerns that it could suppress opposition voices and shift the nation's trajectory away from its pro-Western stance and towards Russia.

While the ruling Georgian Dream party asserts its commitment to EU integration and transparency in NGO funding, critics argue that the law mirrors repressive measures seen in Russia. The move has drawn criticism from Brussels as well, with the European Union cautioning that it contradicts Georgia's longstanding aspiration for EU membership.
Although President Salome Zurabishvili vetoed the legislation, lawmakers have indicated their intention to override her decision. Blinken emphasized that individuals found to undermine democratic processes in Georgia, particularly in the lead-up to the October 2024 elections, could face US visa ineligibility and travel restrictions, along with their immediate family members.
The US hopes that Georgia's leaders will reconsider the law and uphold the country's democratic and Euro-Atlantic aspirations. As the bilateral relationship undergoes review, the US will factor in Georgia's actions in determining its future course. Despite accusations against Georgia's ruling party for steering the country away from EU membership and towards closer ties with Russia, the party maintains its dedication to EU and NATO integration, which enjoys strong support among the Georgian population.
