A New York City hospital has terminated the employment of Palestinian American Muslim nurse Hesen Jabr after she referred to Israel's actions in Gaza as "genocide" during an acceptance speech for an award recognizing her work with bereaved mothers who lost their children during pregnancy and childbirth.
According to a spokesperson from NYU Langone Health, where Jabr worked as a labor and delivery nurse, she had previously been cautioned in December not to bring her opinions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict into the workplace, following a prior incident.
Jabr posted on Instagram that she received the award on May 7, during which she made her comments, and later received a termination letter from the hospital.

In her acceptance speech, Jabr expressed solidarity with mothers who had experienced loss during the conflict in Gaza, describing the award as deeply personal to her.
"It pains me to see the women from my country going through unimaginable losses themselves during the current genocide in Gaza," Jabr remarked in a video of her speech shared online.
The hospital spokesperson explained via email that Jabr's remarks at the employee recognition event, which was attended by many of her colleagues, upset some individuals. Consequently, despite the prior warning, Jabr continued to express her views on the contentious issue, leading to her dismissal.
Israel's ongoing military campaign in Gaza has resulted in a significant death toll, with the local health ministry reporting over 36,000 fatalities in the past eight months alone. Additionally, the conflict has exacerbated hunger and displacement among Gaza's 2.3 million inhabitants.
The hospital's decision to terminate Jabr's employment underscores the sensitive nature of discussing geopolitical conflicts in the workplace and reflects the broader challenges surrounding freedom of expression and diversity of opinions within professional settings.
