The US military announced on Thursday that it had conducted operations targeting Houthi forces in Yemen, destroying four nautical drones and two aerial drones over the Red Sea. This action comes in response to ongoing attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels on commercial vessels in the region, which they claim are in support of Palestinians during the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), in the past 24 hours, American forces successfully neutralized four Iranian-backed Houthi uncrewed surface vessels (USV) and two uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) in the Red Sea. This follows a previous operation where CENTCOM destroyed a ground control station and a command and control node belonging to the Houthis in Yemen.

The increased military response from the United States and its allies, particularly Britain, aims to safeguard shipping lanes in these crucial waterways. Recent incidents have underscored the severity of the threat, with the sinking of the M/V Tutor and serious injuries to crew members aboard the M/V Verbena in separate Houthi attacks this week. Tragically, a Filipino sailor lost his life in one of these assaults.
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller condemned these attacks, emphasizing Washington's commitment to protecting freedom of navigation and commercial shipping in the region. He also called for the immediate release of all detainees, including UN and NGO personnel held by the Houthis since their recent arrests of individuals accused of espionage.
The Houthis, embroiled in a protracted civil war in Yemen, have been accused of exacerbating one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Over half of Yemen's population relies on humanitarian aid in what is already the poorest country in the Arabian Peninsula.
