Washington, D.C. – On Monday, the United States authorized a potential $3.5 billion sale of up to 36 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters to South Korea, including associated missiles and equipment. This sale, approved by the State Department, was formally notified to Congress by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA). Congressional approval is still required to finalize the transaction.

According to the DSCA, this proposed sale aims to bolster South Korea's defensive capabilities against current and future threats, enhancing its ability to deter adversaries and participate in regional operations. The agency highlighted that the sale will support "the security of a major ally and a key player in maintaining political stability and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific region."
Boeing and Lockheed Martin will be the principal contractors for this deal, which is expected to strengthen South Korea's military infrastructure significantly. The timing of the announcement coincides with the beginning of joint military exercises between the U.S. and South Korea. The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise, which commenced on Monday, involves thousands of military personnel and is scheduled to run until August 29. This exercise is designed to enhance readiness and contain potential threats from North Korea, which remains a key concern in the region.
The proposed sale is part of ongoing efforts to reinforce regional security and demonstrate continued U.S. support for its allies in the Indo-Pacific.
