The United States has initiated airstrikes targeting underground bunkers utilized by Yemen's Houthi rebels in a significant military operation. In a rare application of military technology, long-range B-2 stealth bombers were deployed against the Houthis, who have been conducting attacks on vessels in the Red Sea corridor for several months.
Details surrounding the extent of the damage caused by the strikes remain unclear; however, reports indicate that locations in and around Yemen's capital, Sanaa—which has been under Houthi control since 2014—were struck. Additional strikes were reported in Saada, a key Houthi stronghold.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed that the B-2 bombers targeted five hardened underground weapons storage facilities located in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen. Austin emphasized that this operation showcased the United States' capabilities to strike facilities that adversaries often believe are beyond reach due to their fortified or deeply buried nature.
United States Central Command is currently conducting damage assessments, with preliminary reports indicating no civilian casualties resulting from the strikes.
The Houthis have been involved in a series of aggressive actions against merchant vessels, having targeted over 80 ships with missiles and drones in the Red Sea since the onset of the Gaza conflict in October. This campaign has resulted in the deaths of four sailors and the sinking of two vessels.
The Houthis assert that their attacks are aimed at vessels linked to Israel, the United States, or the United Kingdom as part of their opposition to Israel's actions against Hamas in Gaza. However, many of the vessels attacked have little to no connection to the ongoing conflict, including those headed for Iran.
In addition to their maritime attacks, the Houthis have also launched missiles aimed at Israel and have successfully intercepted several US military drones. Following Israel's recent ground invasion of Lebanon and the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, the Houthis have threatened to escalate their attacks further.
