Renowned civil rights activist James Lawson, known for his unwavering commitment to nonviolent protest and pivotal role as a strategist alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has passed away at the age of 95. Lawson, a Methodist minister, was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi's principles of civil disobedience, which he learned during his studies in India.
Through his tireless efforts, Lawson taught countless activists the tactics of passive resistance, empowering them to confront the violence and oppression of racial segregation in the United States. Dr. King himself praised Lawson's methods, hailing him as one of the great "noble men" of the black struggle and dubbing him "the leading theorist and strategist of nonviolence in the world."
Born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, in 1928, Lawson was raised in a family of ministers. His commitment to nonviolence was ignited at the young age of eight, when he vowed never to resort to violence again after an incident where he retaliated against a racial slur. This conviction was further solidified during his refusal to be drafted into the US Army during the Korean War, resulting in a 13-month prison sentence for draft dodging.

After his release, Lawson journeyed to India, where he immersed himself in the study of Gandhi's resistance tactics. Upon his return to the US, he crossed paths with Dr. King at Oberlin College and later relocated to Nashville to study and teach nonviolent protest techniques.
Lawson's influence extended beyond his teachings; several of his students, including future congressman John Lewis and future Washington DC mayor Marion Barry, went on to become prominent figures in the civil rights movement. He was also a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), which played a vital role in organizing protests for racial equality.
Even in the face of tragedy, Lawson's commitment to nonviolence remained unwavering. Following Dr. King's assassination, he befriended James Earl Ray, King's convicted killer, and even officiated Ray's marriage in prison. Lawson came to believe that Ray was not solely responsible for King's death, advocating for a deeper examination of the circumstances surrounding the assassination.
In a poignant speech during the funeral of John Lewis in 2020, Lawson reflected on the enduring legacy of the civil rights movement, emphasizing the unwavering determination of those who fought against injustice. He reiterated the importance of recognizing and addressing systemic racism, declaring, "This must end. Black lives matter."
James Lawson's profound impact on the civil rights movement and his unwavering commitment to nonviolent protest will be remembered as a cornerstone of the fight for racial equality in the United States.
