Washington: The United States has deployed the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group to the Middle East, significantly increasing its military presence in the region, the US military confirmed on Monday.
The powerful aircraft carrier and its accompanying naval ships were sent as Iran continues its crackdown on mass protests. Although President Donald Trump has stepped back from immediate military action, he has made it clear that all options remain on the table.
US Central Command said the strike group is currently operating in the Middle East to support regional security and stability.
Trump Signals Pressure but Open to Talks
President Trump said the US has a “big armada” near Iran but suggested Tehran may be willing to negotiate. He claimed Iran has contacted the US multiple times to discuss a possible deal.
A senior US official also confirmed that Washington is open to communication if Iran reaches out.
Protests and Crackdown in Iran
Protests began in late December over economic problems and later turned into a wider movement against the government. Large demonstrations were reported from January 8 onwards.
Human rights groups accuse Iranian security forces of using deadly force against protesters. A US-based rights organization reported nearly 6,000 deaths, warning the actual number could be higher.
Political Tensions Continue
Despite unrest, Iran’s clerical leadership remains in power. Some opposition groups believe foreign intervention could trigger major political change.
Trump previously warned Iran that the US could intervene if protesters were killed and urged Iranians to take control of government institutions. However, he later paused military strikes, saying Iran had stopped more than 800 executions due to US pressure.
Iran Rejects US Move
Iran dismissed the US deployment, saying it is confident in its ability to defend the country. Iranian officials stated that the arrival of the US carrier will not weaken Iran’s determination.
