Under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, the Kanz Al Jeel Award has unveiled its winners for the 2024 edition. The award, organized by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC), which is part of the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), recognizes exceptional contributions in the field of Nabati poetry and Arabic culture. The announcement of the winners follows the submission of works across all four categories of the third edition, which exemplified the authentic values of Nabati poetry and its role in preserving the heritage and history of the region.

In his remarks, His Excellency Saood Al Hosani, Undersecretary of DCT Abu Dhabi, highlighted the continued success of the Kanz Al Jeel Award in promoting the heritage of Nabati poetry. “The award has flourished year after year, drawing an increasing number of groundbreaking submissions that celebrate not just the art of poetry, but also the deep cultural ties to Emirati and Arab traditions. It continues to resonate profoundly within our community, elevating Nabati poetry as an essential expression of the UAE’s cultural identity and Arab heritage.”

Al Hosani further emphasized the significance of the award’s name, which is inspired by a poem written by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father of the UAE. “The Kanz Al Jeel Award lives up to its namesake by nurturing creativity, intellectual thought, and cultural critique, reflecting Sheikh Zayed’s enduring vision of promoting creativity and preserving cultural traditions,” he added.

The winners of the 2024 edition of the Kanz Al Jeel Award are as follows:

Arts Category:
The Arts category award was granted to Iranian artist Mahsa Davachi for her painting titled United Arab Emirates. The painting was selected for its disciplined composition, harmonious use of colors, and its ability to achieve the golden ratio. The intricate balance and attention to detail, especially in the anatomical proportions of the letterforms within the piece, garnered high praise from the judges.

Poetic Publications Category:
Emirati poet Ateeq Khalfan Alkaabi was honored in the Poetic Publications category for his 2021 collection Signatures, published by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Initiative for Literary Creativity. His collection was commended for seamlessly blending modern themes with traditional poetic forms. His poetry’s profound philosophical reflections, rich vocabulary, and timeless resonance make it a valuable contribution to the field of Nabati poetry.

Poetry Matching Category:
Saudi poet Faisal Al Oteibi won in the Poetry Matching category for his poem Al Sheikh Nad. The poem, which calls upon the youth to adhere to religion, preserve national identity, and pursue education and science for the benefit of the nation, stood out for its powerful use of language and rhythmic cadence. Al Oteibi’s eloquent choice of vocabulary and emphasis on traditional values earned him this prestigious recognition.

Creative Personality Category:
The Creative Personality award was presented to renowned Japanese calligrapher Fuad Kouichi Honda for his significant contributions to the field of Arabic calligraphy. Honda has played a pivotal role in the practice and theory of Arabic calligraphy, creating a deep cultural and artistic connection between Japanese and Arabic cultures. His influence extends to the curriculum he developed for teaching Arabic language and calligraphy, inspiring a new generation of calligraphers.

His Excellency Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, praised the diverse and high-caliber works submitted for this year’s award. “The Kanz Al Jeel Award has rapidly gained prestige in its first three editions, attracting exceptional global talent who bring forward works that resonate deeply with the cultural and artistic heritage of Nabati poetry. The award’s legacy continues to bridge the gap between creativity and heritage, inspiring new generations to expand on their cultural legacy.”

Dr. Tamim also emphasized the importance of the award in promoting Arabic as a language of arts and creativity. “This award is integral to our mission at the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre to elevate Arabic as a living language of creative expression and cultural significance. We aim to inspire poets, writers, researchers, and artists worldwide to contribute to the richness of Arabic cultural heritage.”

Abdullah Majed Al Ali, Director General of the National Library and Archives and Chairman of the Kanz Al Jeel Award Higher Committee, stressed the rigorous standards maintained in evaluating the submissions. “The Kanz Al Jeel Award adheres to the highest standards of governance and integrity, ensuring that the most deserving and inspiring works are recognized. The diverse range of entries we receive each year is a testament to the award’s global impact and influence.”

The awards ceremony will be held on November 20, 2024, at the Zayed Central Library in Al Ain, as part of the Al Ain Book Festival, which is organized by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre from November 17 to 23, 2024. The event will be attended by distinguished guests, reflecting the significance of the award in preserving and advancing the cultural legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed.

The winner in the Creative Personality category will receive a gold medal bearing the award’s emblem, a certificate of appreciation, and a cash prize of AED 500,000. Winners in other categories will each receive a gold medal, a certificate of appreciation, and a cash prize of AED 200,000.

The Kanz Al Jeel Award plays an essential role in celebrating and preserving Nabati poetry, Arabic calligraphy, and other art forms, including music, folk singing, and painting. Through its recognition of outstanding artistic and literary achievements, the award continues to uphold the rich cultural heritage of the UAE and the Arab world, ensuring its continued transmission to future generations.
