UN Reports Over 560,000 People Affected by Unprecedented Floods in Yemen

In recent weeks, Yemen has been hit hard by severe flooding and violent windstorms, impacting approximately 562,000 people, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). On Thursday, the IOM made a critical appeal for $13.3 million in donations to address the urgent needs of those affected, highlighting a significant funding shortfall.

The IOM emphasized that these "unprecedented weather events" have exacerbated the suffering in Yemen, the poorest country in the Arabian Peninsula, which is already facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. Matt Huber, the acting chief of the IOM's Yemen mission, stated, "The scale of the destruction is staggering, and we urgently need additional funding to ensure that the most vulnerable are not left behind."

Since late July, Yemen has experienced torrential rains and flooding that have caused widespread devastation. Homes have been destroyed, thousands of families have been displaced, and critical infrastructure—including health centers, schools, and roads—has sustained severe damage. The UN agency reported that these conditions are particularly alarming given Yemen's fragile state.

Last month, heavy rains resulted in flash floods in the Mahawit governorate, leading to the tragic loss of around 40 lives, with many others reported missing. The UN’s humanitarian agency, OCHA, indicated that dozens of homes were either damaged or completely destroyed, displacing at least 215 families.

The impact of the floods has been dire. According to UN figures, over 60 individuals have lost their lives in earlier flash floods that have swept through various regions of Yemen since late July, with hundreds more injured. The IOM noted, "These rains have not only led to tragic loss of life but have also wiped out entire communities' belongings and means of survival."

In light of these devastating events, the IOM has reiterated the urgent need for immediate funding to meet the most pressing needs of those affected. The agency has warned that severe weather conditions are expected to persist in the coming weeks, further endangering the lives and livelihoods of Yemen's most vulnerable populations. Without timely assistance, many families may face even greater hardships as they struggle to recover from the impacts of this humanitarian disaster.
