UN: North Korea's Hwasong-11 missile used in Ukraine, violating sanctions

United Nations sanctions monitors informed a Security Council committee on Monday that debris recovered from a missile strike in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on January 2 originated from a North Korean Hwasong-11 series ballistic missile. This revelation, detailed in a 32-page report, underscores a breach of the arms embargo imposed on North Korea by the international community.

The UN monitors, who conducted an inspection earlier this month, found no evidence implicating Russia in the missile's origin. They were unable to determine the launch location or responsible party. However, Ukrainian authorities suggested that the missile was launched from within Russian territory, potentially implicating Russian nationals in the violation of the arms embargo.

Both Russia and North Korea have denied allegations of weapons transfer for use against Ukraine, despite accusations from the US and other nations. The incident adds tension to the already strained relations between Russia, North Korea, and the international community.

The Hwasong-11 series ballistic missiles were first tested publicly by North Korea in 2019, representing a significant advancement in their military capabilities. The revelation of North Korean involvement in the Ukrainian missile strike raises concerns about the proliferation of advanced weaponry in conflict zones.

In response to the findings, the Russian mission to the United Nations refrained from immediate comment. However, the US has previously accused Russia of deploying DPRK-supplied missiles against Ukraine on multiple occasions.

The Kharkiv region prosecutor's office had earlier displayed missile fragments to the media, highlighting differences from Russian models and suggesting North Korean involvement. This discovery underscores the need for continued vigilance and international cooperation to prevent the proliferation of weapons and maintain peace and security worldwide.
