UN: Israel Bombs Gaza School Without Warning

Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the UN's agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), criticized Israel's bombing of a Gaza school, emphasizing that the attack occurred without prior warning to the thousands of displaced individuals seeking shelter there. According to the Israeli military, the strike targeted a Hamas compound situated within the UNRWA school in the Nuseirat area, purportedly killing several "terrorists" in a precision operation.

However, Gaza's Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital reported a devastating toll, stating that at least 37 people lost their lives in the attack. Lazzarini took to social media to condemn the assault, highlighting the blatant disregard for international humanitarian law in targeting or utilizing UN buildings for military purposes.

He stressed that UNRWA consistently shares the coordinates of all its facilities, including the school in question, with the Israeli army and other involved parties in the conflict. The school, which was serving as a shelter for approximately 6,000 displaced individuals, was struck amidst the ongoing hostilities.

In response to the incident, the Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem labeled the strike a "suspected war crime." While acknowledging the possibility of Hamas using the school for military operations, B'Tselem underscored that such actions, while illegal, do not justify the extensive harm inflicted on civilians seeking refuge from the conflict.

Furthermore, B'Tselem condemned the civilian casualties resulting from Israel's military operations in Gaza, urging the international community to intervene and put an end to the ongoing violence. The organization emphasized the necessity of preventing civilian deaths and called for concerted efforts to halt the fighting and address the humanitarian crisis in the region.
