Sudan Accuses UAE of Arming Paramilitary Force, Sparks UN Security Council Clash
Sudan has levied serious accusations against the United Arab Emirates, alleging that the UAE has been supplying weapons to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) amid the ongoing civil war that has ravaged the country for 14 months. The Sudanese government's accusations, voiced by its UN ambassador Al-Harith Idriss al-Harith Mohamed, have ignited a heated confrontation at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

During a contentious meeting late Tuesday, Sudan's representative claimed to have substantial evidence of the UAE's arms supply to the RSF, a group that has been clashing with the Sudanese army since April 2023 and faces serious allegations of ethnic war crimes. Mohamed stated that Sudan plans to submit this evidence to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for further investigation.
Mohamed urged the UNSC to take a firm stance by naming and shaming the UAE, demanding greater accountability for what he describes as serious violations. In response, UAE Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab dismissed Sudan's claims as “ludicrous” and a diversion from what he views as more pressing concerns, such as the alleged grave violations occurring on the ground.
Abushahab questioned Sudan’s commitment to resolving the conflict, citing the Sudanese government's refusal to participate in ceasefire talks held in Jeddah in May, despite efforts by the United States and Saudi Arabia to mediate. The UAE ambassador also pointed to Sudan's obstruction of humanitarian aid, which aid agencies warn is contributing to a looming hunger crisis in the country.
A January UN report, prepared for the UNSC, had previously documented “credible” evidence of the UAE supplying the RSF with weapons multiple times per week through northern Chad. The UAE has denied these allegations.
The conflict has had a devastating impact, with the UN reporting over 14,000 deaths, 33,000 injuries, and 10 million people displaced due to the fighting between the Sudanese armed forces and the RSF. The UN Assistant Secretary-General, Martha Pobee, highlighted the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in the Darfur region, where ethnic violence is reportedly escalating and critical infrastructure is under threat.
