Moscow, Russia: Ukrainian drones launched an overnight attack that resulted in a Russian munitions depot ablaze in the Voronezh region near the shared border of both countries, officials from Russia and Ukraine confirmed on Sunday.
"Several drones were detected and destroyed overnight by air defense systems above the Voronezh region," stated regional governor Alexander Gusev on Telegram.
The incident occurred in the Podgorensky district, approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the Ukrainian border, where debris from the destroyed drones ignited a fire within the depot. Governor Gusev reported that the fire caused explosives stored at the site to begin detonating, though no injuries were reported.
Emergency response teams were deployed to manage the situation, with evacuations underway for local residents near the depot.

A Ukrainian defense source informed AFP that their drones had targeted the munitions factory in the overnight assault. The source detailed that the depot housed a variety of military supplies, including surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, tank shells, artillery ammunition, and other armaments. The drone strike resulted in a significant explosion at the site.
Since Russia's military offensive began in February 2022, both Russia and Ukraine have extensively utilized drones, including those equipped with large explosive payloads capable of reaching targets hundreds of kilometers away.
Throughout this year, Ukraine has intensified its attacks on Russian territory, targeting energy facilities it alleges support the Russian military, as well as towns and villages located near the border.
The incident marks another escalation in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, highlighting the persistent use of advanced military technology in the region's volatile geopolitical landscape.
