Kyiv has announced that Ukrainian troops have seized control of 100 settlements within Russia since launching an offensive into the Kursk region on August 6, according to Oleksandr Syrsky, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Syrsky reported that the Ukrainian forces continue to make significant advances, inflicting considerable losses on Russian personnel and equipment.
Syrsky indicated that Russia has responded by redeploying approximately 30,000 troops from other regions to the Kursk area, where they are now attempting to establish a defensive perimeter around Ukrainian positions. This move comes as Russian forces seek to bolster their defenses against the ongoing Ukrainian operation.

In a statement released Tuesday, Russia's Defence Ministry revealed that its Akhmat special forces conducted a reconnaissance operation in the Sudzha district of Kursk, reclaiming a strategic high ground previously held by Ukrainian forces. The high ground, located 400-500 meters from Ukrainian forward positions, now allows Russian troops to monitor Ukrainian military movements more effectively.
Syrsky explained that Ukraine's operation in Kursk is aimed at creating a buffer zone to prevent artillery shelling from reaching the adjacent Sumy region in Ukraine. He also noted that Ukrainian forces have captured 594 Russian servicemen during the operation.
According to Syrsky, Russia is trying to counter Ukraine's advances by withdrawing troops from other fronts, although forces remain heavily engaged in the eastern Donetsk region, where the situation is described as "difficult."
The offensive in the Kursk region began on the night of August 5-6, when Ukrainian troops entered near the town of Sudzha, situated about 10 kilometers from the border. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the incursion as a "large-scale provocation" and "terrorist attack," accusing Kyiv of indiscriminate shooting.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later confirmed that the operation was a deliberate strategic move aimed at creating a defensive buffer zone to mitigate Russian attacks. The escalating conflict underscores the ongoing and intense nature of the military engagement between the two nations.
