Amber Potter, aged 23, has been handed a prison sentence of three and a half years for her involvement in a tragic car crash resulting in the death of 64-year-old David Sinar. The incident occurred on September 15, 2021. Potter, driving from Glastonbury to Norfolk, collided with Sinar's scooter at a speed of 70mph.
Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Potter was engaging in distracted driving behavior at the time of the crash. She was found to have sent a total of 55 messages during her journey, with 20 of them containing background road noise, suggesting they were composed while she was behind the wheel. Additionally, investigators noted that there were skid marks at the crash scene, indicating that Potter had made no effort to brake before impact.

Initially, Potter attempted to deflect blame by claiming that Sinar's scooter lights were off. However, CCTV footage contradicted this assertion. Judge Katharine Moore strongly condemned Potter's actions, labeling them as "gravely inappropriate" and a "grossly avoidable distraction."
Further scrutiny of the case revealed that Potter had been engaged in various forms of phone usage while driving, including sending texts, recording voice messages, and using Facebook. Despite setting her phone to "do not disturb" mode, Potter continued to use it throughout the journey.
During the trial, Potter's defense argued that her actions were characterized by "sporadic stupidity" and emphasized her remorse. However, Judge Moore underscored the severity of Potter's offense, acknowledging her positive qualities while also emphasizing the criminal nature of her actions.
In addition to her prison sentence, Potter has been banned from driving for an additional 45 months following her release and has been ordered to retake a driving test. The judge's ruling serves as a stern reminder of the consequences of distracted driving, which police have described as a "selfish and needless act" with devastating outcomes.
The family of David Sinar, a former mechanic and charity cyclist, expressed their grief over the loss of their loved one. Sinar was described as a "very competent" rider who had recently purchased the scooter just hours before the fatal crash. His wife delivered an emotional statement, condemning Potter's actions as unforgivable and attributing them to a blatant disregard for traffic laws.
