A 17-year-old girl from the UK found herself in a life-threatening situation after her lung collapsed, a consequence of excessive vaping that caused a small air blister, known as a pulmonary bleb, to burst. The teenager, named Kyla Blythe, had been vaping the equivalent of 400 cigarettes a week, which led to the catastrophic event.
The incident unfolded on May 11, during a sleepover at a friend's house, when Kyla suddenly collapsed and turned blue. Rushed to the hospital, she underwent a grueling five-and-a-half-hour surgery to address the critical issue, wherein part of her lung had to be removed to mitigate the damage caused by the collapsed lung.
Kyla's father, Mark Blythe, described the experience as terrifying and emotionally wrenching. Witnessing his daughter's struggle for life was harrowing, with medical professionals noting that she was perilously close to experiencing cardiac arrest during the ordeal.

The ordeal has been a wake-up call for Kyla, who had started vaping at the age of 15, influenced by her peers. Naively believing it to be harmless, she consumed an entire 4,000-puff vape each week. However, the dire consequences she faced have left her deeply shaken and resolved to stay away from vaping altogether.
Acknowledging the gravity of her situation, Kyla emphasized the need for awareness about the dangers of vaping, particularly among young people. Her experience serves as a stark reminder of the perils associated with vaping, urging others to reconsider their habits and prioritize their health and well-being.
Mark Blythe echoed his daughter's sentiments, urging young people to discard vapes, emphasizing that the risks far outweigh any perceived benefits.
Statistics from Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) reveal a troubling trend, with the popularity of vaping surging among children, nearly doubling to 20% in 2023. Furthermore, alarming reports indicate that even children below the age of 5 are falling victim to vaping addiction, resulting in hospitalizations due to collapsed lungs.
Beyond the immediate threat of lung damage, vaping poses long-term risks, including the potential to stunt brain growth in teenagers due to exposure to toxic chemicals like lead and uranium found in vape products.
Kyla's ordeal serves as a cautionary tale, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive education and awareness campaigns to combat the growing epidemic of vaping-related health issues, especially among vulnerable populations such as teenagers.
