A comprehensive report by Sapien Labs sheds light on a global decline in mental well-being, with the UK standing out as the second-least happy country. The "Mental State of the World" survey, engaging over 400,000 individuals across 71 nations, exposes a lingering toll on mental health stemming from the initial impact of the pandemic. The UK scored a mere 49 on the Mental Health Quotient (MHQ) scale, where 35% of Britons reported experiencing "distress."
An intriguing correlation emerged, indicating a connection between wealth and unhappiness, with wealthier nations displaying lower scores. In contrast, non-English-speaking developing countries such as the Dominican Republic, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania ranked among the happiest. Notably, these countries showcased a vibrant appreciation for life compared to some in the developed world.
The study identified Australia, Tajikistan, Brazil, South Africa, the UK, and Uzbekistan as the worst performers. Europe and North America, as broader regions, demonstrated subpar results, suggesting a pervasive trend.
While the findings might initially present a negative perspective, the report's authors urge the UK to interpret it as a call to action. They emphasize positive aspects, such as London being recognized as Europe's best city and Glasgow boasting a premier live music scene.
This survey contributes meaningfully to the ongoing global conversation surrounding mental health. It underlines a widespread deterioration in mental well-being on a global scale. While further research may be warranted, the report underscores the potential necessity for heightened attention to mental well-being in various countries, including the UK. Despite the challenging ranking, the report encourages proactive efforts to address mental health concerns and highlights positive elements within the UK's cultural landscape.
