At the age of 95, Dr. David Marjot has achieved the distinction of being Kingston University's oldest graduate, having earned an MA in Modern European Philosophy. A retired psychiatrist residing in Surrey, Dr. Marjot embarked on this academic journey 72 years after initially qualifying as a doctor. Motivated by the evolving landscape of the psychiatry industry in the UK, he sought a deeper understanding of philosophy and its modern applications within the profession.
"I knew time was of the essence, so when I came across an advertisement for a local course in The Times Literary Supplement, I decided to apply," he shared with Kingston University. Reflecting on his experience, Dr. Marjot expressed gratitude for the accommodating faculty and students at Kingston University, describing the course as wonderful and the teaching as excellent. He considers it an honor to have pursued this degree at such a fantastic institution.
During his graduation ceremony, Dr. Marjot, accompanied by his son and son-in-law, received a resounding standing ovation from peers and the audience. Kingston University Provost Professor Helen Laville awarded him his degree, marking a remarkable achievement in his academic journey.
Offering advice to those contemplating a return to education after a substantial hiatus, Dr. Marjot emphasized the importance of pursuing interests. Despite the challenges, he found the experience positive, attributing it to the guidance of world-class teachers. Dr. Marjot advocates for a mindset of continuous self-challenge, even in later years.
Having lost his wife after 65 years of marriage prior to the COVID pandemic, the MA course served as a significant means for Dr. Marjot to occupy his mind during a challenging period, according to the university.
At 95, Dr. Marjot joins the ranks of the UK's oldest-ever graduates, with the current record held by 96-year-old Archie White, who graduated from the University of Brighton in 2021. Undeterred by age, Dr. Marjot is now contemplating pursuing a part-time doctorate, envisioning its completion at the remarkable age of 102
