The British Government announced on Friday that it is extending a ban on bringing in meat and dairy products from the European Union (EU) to Great Britain. This is being done to protect the UK’s food system and farmers from a disease called foot and mouth disease (FMD).
The government has taken this step because there have been more cases of FMD in several countries across Europe. Starting from Saturday, April 12th, travelers will no longer be able to bring certain meats like beef, lamb, goat, and pork, or dairy products into Great Britain from EU countries for personal use. This includes things like sandwiches, cheese, cured meats, raw meats, and milk, even if they are packaged or bought at duty-free shops.

Although FMD does not affect humans, it is a highly contagious disease that can harm animals like cattle, sheep, pigs, and other animals with hooves, such as wild boar, deer, llamas, and alpacas. FMD can spread easily and cause serious problems for farmers. It can result in animals getting sick, and it can also stop the UK from selling animals, meat, and dairy to other countries.
Earlier this year, the UK already banned personal imports of meat and dairy products from countries like Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria, where FMD was confirmed. Now, the government has decided to extend the ban to all EU countries. This new rule will help protect British farmers and livestock from the disease.
The new restrictions only apply to travelers coming to Great Britain, not to those traveling from Northern Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man.
Farming Minister Daniel Zeichner said the government will do everything it can to protect British farmers from the disease. He emphasized that these new restrictions on personal imports of meat and dairy products will help stop the spread of FMD and keep Britain’s food system safe.
If someone is caught bringing these banned items into the country, they will have to give them up at the border, or they could be seized and destroyed. In serious cases, people could be fined up to £5,000 in England for breaking the rules.
