Outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has emerged as a pivotal figure among British Indians, securing a decisive victory in the Richmond and Northallerton constituency in Yorkshire. As the Conservative Party faced substantial losses in the general election, Sunak's win underscored a significant retention of seats by Indian-origin MPs. This election saw a record-breaking 26 Indian-origin Members of Parliament elected to the House of Commons, with several Conservative candidates successfully defending their positions despite a challenging electoral landscape.
Among the notable Conservative winners were former Home Secretaries Suella Braverman and Priti Patel, along with Claire Coutinho, an ally of Sunak from Goa. Gagan Mohindra retained his seat in South West Hertfordshire, while Shivani Raja secured a Conservative gain in Leicester East, a closely watched constituency where she competed against Labour's Rajesh Agrawal. Both candidates campaigned vigorously on local issues, including the preservation of Leicester's renowned Diwali lights amid budgetary constraints.

However, the Conservative Party also suffered significant setbacks, with losses including Shailesh Vara in North West Cambridgeshire and Ameet Jogia in Hendon, London, both defeated by Labour candidates.
Reflecting the broader electoral trends, Labour saw substantial successes among Indian diaspora candidates, including veteran MPs like Seema Malhotra in Feltham and Heston, Valerie Vaz in Walsall and Bloxwich, and Lisa Nandy in Wigan. Preet Kaur Gill and Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi reclaimed their seats for Labour in Birmingham Edgbaston and Slough respectively, while newcomers such as Jas Athwal in Ilford South and Baggy Shanker in Derby South made notable debuts.
The Liberal Democrats, who gained over 60 seats in a strong electoral performance, celebrated victories like Munira Wilson's re-election in Twickenham.
Overall, the 2024 UK general election highlighted the growing influence and representation of British Indians across political parties, underscoring their increasing role in shaping the nation's parliamentary landscape.
