UK: Air Force Plane with Minister Signal Jammed Near Russia

A UK Royal Air Force aircraft carrying the British defence minister encountered signal interference near Russian territory this week, confirmed a government spokesperson on Thursday. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening as Grant Shapps returned from observing a NATO exercise in Poland aboard an RAF jet, as reported by The Times.

According to the government spokesperson, the aircraft experienced temporary GPS jamming while flying near Kaliningrad, located approximately 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) west of Moscow on the Baltic Sea. The spokesperson emphasized that although the jamming disrupted the GPS signal for about 30 minutes, it did not pose a threat to the aircraft's safety. Such instances of GPS interference near Kaliningrad, a Russian territory, are not uncommon, the spokesperson noted.

The Times, whose journalists were aboard the plane, reported that the interference disrupted mobile phone internet connectivity, prompting the aircraft to rely on alternative methods for navigation.

Earlier, Shapps had observed the Steadfast Defender exercise in Poland, witnessing numerous troops participating in the largest drills conducted by the US-led military alliance since the Cold War.

The UK has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia, which escalated into a full-scale invasion in February 2022. London has pledged over £7 billion ($8.9 billion) in military aid to Ukraine and has provided training to tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops.
