UAE to Launch Digital Health Platform for Smokers to Detect Lung Cancer

The UAE is set to launch a digital health assessment platform aimed at enhancing the early detection of lung cancer, with a special focus on smokers. This initiative by the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) targets high-risk groups, particularly individuals aged 50 and above who are either current or former smokers. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally, with smoking responsible for approximately 85% of all lung cancer cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that in 2020, lung cancer led to 1.8 million deaths, accounting for 18% of all cancer fatalities worldwide.

In addition to this digital platform, the Ministry has revealed the development of a national guide for the early detection of lung cancer. The guide is being created in collaboration with the National Committee for the Prevention and Control of Cancer and is part of the Ministry's broader aim to promote non-communicable disease prevention and ensure the sustainability of the nation's healthcare infrastructure. An integrated system utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) will also be developed to aid in early detection, while medical staff will be trained on international best practices to better address this deadly disease. The AI-based system is expected to significantly improve the early identification of lung cancer, leading to better outcomes for patients.

This initiative is being launched as part of a strategic partnership between MoHAP and AstraZeneca, a global pharmaceutical company, which will also contribute to the efforts aimed at reducing the incidence of lung cancer in the UAE. This collaboration aligns with the global observance of Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November and underscores the UAE's commitment to improving national health indicators. The partnership supports the World Health Organization's goal of reducing cancer-related deaths by 30% by 2030.

MoHAP, together with AstraZeneca and the Emirates Oncology Society, has organized a series of specialized events in Dubai to raise awareness about the importance of early lung cancer detection. These events aim to educate the public on the disease's symptoms and encourage regular screenings through risk assessment questionnaires. Participants will be directed to health facilities where they can undergo early detection tests. A workshop featuring both local and international experts will also be held to discuss the latest methods of detecting lung cancer and to share experiences from lung cancer survivors who benefited from early detection.

Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary for the Public Health Sector at MoHAP, expressed confidence in the collaboration with AstraZeneca. He stated that the partnership aims to advance lung cancer early detection programs through AI and is part of the Ministry's broader efforts to develop sustainable health solutions. The UAE continues to maintain cancer rates below the global average, thanks to its progressive health policies. The Ministry remains committed to expanding its early detection programs, offering comprehensive and reliable information to both the public and healthcare professionals. 

Earlier this year, MoHAP had already expanded the National Cancer Early Detection Programme to include lung cancer, improving recovery rates and reducing mortality through early diagnosis. This ongoing commitment to advancing healthcare in the UAE reflects the country’s vision to provide high-quality services that enhance the well-being of its population. Dr. Al Rand emphasized the importance of scientific research and strategic partnerships in achieving these health goals, ensuring that the UAE remains at the forefront of cancer prevention and care.
