In response to the tragic loss of a seven-year-old boy in Sharjah, educational leaders in the UAE are mobilizing to address the profound impact of the incident on students, especially those who may lack the coping mechanisms necessary to navigate such traumatic events. The child, a student at Ibn Sina School, was discovered lifeless in a locked car after being left unattended for an extended period.
Educators and wellness experts within the UAE education sector are actively collaborating to understand and respond effectively to such distressing circumstances. Abhilasha Singh, Principal of Shining Star International, emphasized the necessity of having specialized staff on hand to engage with students during times of crisis. She stressed the importance of providing students with a safe and supportive space to express their emotions and manage their grief. Singh also advocated for proactive measures to develop resilience among students, highlighting the significance of implementing a robust social-emotional learning program within schools.

Similarly, Sushma Dmello, a Counselor at Amity School Dubai, emphasized the pivotal role of schools in fostering a supportive environment where students feel understood and cared for as they navigate the grieving process. Dmello noted that teachers can play a crucial role in facilitating access to emotional support and coping strategies by encouraging students to seek help from school counselors or psychologists.
Furthermore, experts underscored the potential impact of grief on students' academic performance and concentration. Dmello highlighted the importance of accommodating grieving students by offering flexible deadlines, extensions on assignments, and additional academic support. She emphasized the need for ongoing monitoring of students' academic progress and emotional well-being to ensure comprehensive support.
Girish Hemnani, an Energy Healer and Life Coach based in Dubai, emphasized the importance of acknowledging the uniqueness of each student's grief journey. He stressed the significance of providing a non-judgmental space for students to express their emotions and grieve in their own way. Additionally, Hemnani highlighted the importance of facilitating commemorative rituals or tributes to honor the life of the departed classmate and provide comfort to grieving students.
In essence, UAE educational institutions are taking proactive measures to provide holistic support to students grappling with the loss of a classmate. By prioritizing emotional well-being and implementing comprehensive support systems, schools aim to navigate students through the grieving process with care and compassion.
