UAE Residents Rally to Aid Flood-Hit Areas, From Meds to Baby Food

In the wake of the devastating rains that inundated various regions of the UAE, nearly 6,000 volunteers associated with a single support group have mobilized efforts to aid those affected. On Thursday, a distress call surfaced in a Rainsupport WhatsApp group, established in response to the crisis, when a woman urgently sought help for her 71-year-old father trapped alone in a high-rise building in Sharjah's Al Majaz area. Struggling with a heart condition and hindered by a lack of electricity and a malfunctioning elevator, the elderly man was unable to descend the stairs to safety.

Responding swiftly, volunteers sprang into action, braving floodwaters to rescue the stranded individual and transport him to a hospital, effectively resolving the emergency. This incident is just one among many that the dedicated volunteers have tackled since Tuesday, tirelessly providing aid to hundreds of individuals in distress. From offering shelter, food, medicine, groceries, and essential supplies, they are working tirelessly to alleviate the suffering caused by the disaster.

Muneer Al Wafaa, the man behind these support groups, recounted the initiative's inception, explaining how he launched a Rainsupport WhatsApp group as the situation escalated. Within hours, the group reached its maximum capacity, prompting the creation of additional groups to accommodate the overwhelming response. Leveraging his IT background, Al Wafaa also established a website, rainsupportuae.com, facilitating aid coordination between those in need and volunteers offering assistance.

Requests for assistance have varied, from urgent medication needs for cancer patients to basic necessities like food and water for hungry families. Al Wafaa emphasized their commitment to confidentiality and solidarity, reassuring individuals that any data collected remains strictly confidential and solely used for assistance purposes.

The group does not accept cash donations but welcomes contributions of essential items like canned food, fruits, milk, bread, and water. Volunteers, spanning diverse nationalities, ages, and backgrounds, have emerged as the real heroes on the ground, united in their mission to provide relief.

Subgroups have formed to address specific needs, such as food aid and reuniting car owners with lost number plates. Off-roaders skilled in navigating treacherous waters have also joined the effort. Local organizations like Markaz Dubai and its sister concern, Indian Cultural Forum (ICF), have mobilized hundreds of volunteers to aid flood-hit areas, undertaking tasks ranging from cleaning houses to assisting with mosque preparations.

As the situation remains dire, particularly in heavily affected areas like Sharjah's industrial area and Al Majaz, volunteers continue to work tirelessly to provide assistance. Al Wafaa plans to establish aid collection centers in strategic locations to expedite aid distribution, reflecting the unwavering commitment of UAE residents to support their communities in times of crisis.
