An official from the State Security Prosecution confirmed to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) that investigations into a major security case have now been completed. The case involves an attempt to transfer military equipment to the Port Sudan Authority using UAE territory. According to the official, all accused individuals will soon be referred to trial. This step reflects the UAE’s strong commitment to transparency, justice, and strict enforcement of the law.
The UAE Attorney-General first revealed details of the case on April 30, when he announced that security authorities had successfully foiled an attempt to illegally smuggle weapons and military equipment. The smuggling activity was linked to an organised cell involved in arms trafficking and money laundering. The suspects were carrying out hidden brokerage operations, secret mediation, and undisclosed commission deals through covert channels. Their aim was to move military-grade items to Port Sudan.
The arrests were made at one of the UAE’s airports during an inspection of a private aircraft. Authorities discovered a large quantity of Goryunov-type ammunition measuring 54.7 x 62mm. This ammunition is known to be military grade and cannot be transported without strict legal approval. During the operation, security officials also seized part of the financial proceeds from the deal, found in the possession of two members of the group. Their presence, intentions, and the hidden funds raised immediate red flags for the authorities.
Legal Oversight and Authorised Operation
The entire operation was conducted with full legal supervision. Public Prosecution oversaw every step, and the arrests were carried out following judicial warrants issued by the Attorney-General. These warrants authorised both the arrest of suspects and the search of the aircraft and related locations. This ensured that every action taken during the operation followed the UAE’s legal procedures and protected the integrity of the investigation.
The investigation revealed strong links between the cell members and Sudanese military authorities. Evidence suggested that the suspects had dealings with Sudanese officers, politicians, officials, businessmen, and companies that appear on US sanctions lists. Some individuals involved are also listed by the Interpol. These findings showed that the illegal operations were part of a larger network connected to Sudan’s military procurement activities.
Role of Sudan’s Armament Committee
The inquiry further showed that the transactions were conducted at the request of Sudan’s Armed Forces Armament Committee. This committee is chaired by Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, with Yasser Al-Atta serving as his deputy. Coordination of the activities was reportedly carried out by Othman Al-Zubair, who serves as the financial official of the Port Sudan Authority. According to Public Prosecution, more names connected to the dealings will be announced as the case progresses.
One of the most significant discoveries in the investigation was the identification of the funding sources behind the military equipment deals. Authorities found strong evidence, including audio and video recordings, communication exchanges between cell members, and transaction-related documents. These documents included contracts, financial records, and written statements showing how funds were transferred and how the smuggling process was meant to be carried out.
Involvement of a Bank Operating in the UAE
Reports from technical committees added another layer to the investigation. They confirmed that part of the funding for the illegal activities passed through a bank operating inside the UAE. This finding is now being studied in detail to ensure all individuals or institutions involved are held accountable. The revelation also highlights the importance of strict monitoring to prevent misuse of financial systems for illegal transactions.
With the investigation now complete, the accused individuals will be referred to trial. The UAE continues to stress its strong dedication to protecting national security, preventing criminal activities on its soil, and upholding international laws and agreements. The case demonstrates the country’s capability to identify, stop, and investigate complex networks involved in illegal arms smuggling and financial crimes.
