Established in 2009, the Mohamed bin Zayed (MBZ) Fund has been instrumental in supporting conservation projects for species and subspecies across 170 countries. Recently, President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan announced a significant contribution of US$40 million to the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund (MBZ Fund). This announcement was made by Razan Al Mubarak, Managing Director of the MBZ Species Conservation Fund and UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP28, during her address at the Asian Venture Philanthropy Forum (AVPN) Global Conference 2024 held at the St. Regis on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi.
The new contribution reflects the President's deep commitment to the natural world and underscores the UAE's enduring dedication to nature and species conservation. With this latest contribution, the Fund's endowment is set to exceed $70 million by 2028.

H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes' Affairs, praised the significant impact of the Fund, which has supported over 2,750 projects worldwide aimed at conserving 1,700 species and subspecies. These projects span all seven continents, including Antarctica.
The Fund's endowment solely supports its small grants program, which provides funding of up to $25,000 per project. This program targets the world's most vulnerable species listed as Endangered or Critically Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Additionally, it supports projects focusing on species classified as Data Deficient, about which little is known but are likely threatened with extinction.
Conservationists are recognized as invaluable assets in the fight to protect endangered species. The MBZ Species Conservation Fund not only supports their scientific endeavors but also provides visibility for their projects and the species they aim to conserve.
Mohammed Al Bowardi, Deputy Chair of the Board of Directors of MBZ Fund, emphasized the critical importance of supporting conservation efforts, particularly amid the ongoing extinction crisis. He highlighted the Fund's role as a lifeline for conservationists, providing vital support in challenging and sometimes perilous conditions.
The President's generous contribution ensures the continuity and impact of the Fund's endowment, safeguarding the future of conservation efforts for generations to come.
