Smoking is a widespread practice in the UAE, and the growing popularity of e-cigarettes and vapes has expanded the options available to smokers, making it easier to access tobacco-related products. Experts in the UAE emphasize that non-smokers, especially children exposed to second-hand smoke, can experience similar health effects as active smokers.
Global statistics from the World Health Organization reveal that tobacco use is responsible for more than 8 million deaths annually, with approximately 1.3 million deaths attributed to exposure to second-hand smoke among non-smokers.
The UAE has enacted stringent laws to address smoking in the proximity of children and the distribution of tobacco-related products to minors. The Wadeema Law, which establishes children's rights in the country, strictly prohibits smoking in any public or private means of transportation in the presence of a child under the age of 12. The prohibition extends to smoking in enclosed areas or rooms with children present. Violators of this law face penalties in the form of fines, with a minimum amount set at Dh5,000.
In addition to combating smoking around children, the UAE has outlined penalties for individuals involved in selling or attempting to sell tobacco products to minors. Those found guilty may face a jail term of not less than 3 months and/or a fine of not less than Dh15,000. Sellers are required to verify the age of the purchaser, extending this requirement to the sale of alcoholic beverages and other materials that pose a health risk to children.
These comprehensive measures underscore the UAE's commitment to protecting the well-being of children and non-smokers, aligning with global efforts to reduce the health impacts associated with tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure.
